Time as Signifier and Signified

(deutsche Version)

The distinction between signifier (word) and signified (object) is unproblematic as long as the signified is accessible to sensory experience (transcendent to consciousness). The situation differs, however, when the object is non-material and abstract such as space, time, or language itself. In such cases, the object is given only through the way it is spoken about; that is, – like the signifier – is part of language (immanent to consciousness), constituting a linguistic expression.
