Sunrise and daybreak refer to one and the same phenomenon. Yet we speak of the one sun that appears again and again in the morning and the countable different days that follow one another. This antagonistic expression of stability and change dates back to ancient times and is so deeply rooted in language that it usually goes unnoticed. Depending on the occasion, we emphasize the eternal return of the same or the progression of time.
